The case for new

Buying new gives you the $7,500 federal tax credit at point of sale (2024+ rule), full manufacturer warranty, the latest software and charging hardware, and no unknown battery history. You choose the exact configuration. New is best if you're keeping the car 7+ years and want certainty.

The case for used

A 2–3 year old EV often costs 30–40% less than new while retaining most of the useful battery life. The $4,000 used EV credit (income limits: $75k single, $150k joint) applies to qualifying used EVs from dealers. You get most of the technology at significantly less cost.

  • ·3-year-old Tesla Model Y: ~$32,000 vs $47,000 new
  • ·3-year-old Hyundai Ioniq 5: ~$28,000 vs $43,000 new
  • ·Used EV credit: 30% of price up to $4,000
  • ·Battery warranty often transfers or still has years remaining

What to verify on a used EV

Battery health is the key due-diligence item. Request any service records, verify the VIN history, and get an independent inspection if possible. Ask specifically whether the battery warranty transfers and whether it has ever been claimed.

Best candidates for used EV purchase

Model Y and Model 3 from 2021–2023 are the best-supported used EVs — huge service network, OTA updates, and strong resale data. Chevy Bolt 2022–2023 (after the battery recall fix) is an excellent budget used option under $20,000.

Quick decision framework

Buy new if: you want maximum warranty, specific configuration, and plan to keep it 7+ years. Buy used if: you want maximum value per dollar, are comfortable doing pre-purchase due diligence, and the model has a known service track record.
