What goes away

EVs remove many gas-car maintenance items: oil changes, spark plugs, timing belts, exhaust systems, and many transmission services. That is why routine service is usually simpler and cheaper over time.

What still needs attention

EVs still need tires, cabin air filters, brake fluid, wiper blades, coolant checks, and suspension work. The car is simpler, but it is not maintenance-free. Heavy EV batteries can also make tire rotation more important.

  • ·Rotate tires on schedule
  • ·Replace cabin air filters
  • ·Check brake fluid and coolant intervals
  • ·Keep software updated
  • ·Inspect suspension and alignment

Brake pads usually last longer

Regenerative braking means the motor slows the car and recovers energy before the friction brakes do much work. Many EV owners go far longer between brake pad replacements, especially in city driving.

Tires can be the surprise cost

EVs are quick and heavy, which can wear tires faster if you drive aggressively. Choose EV-rated or high-load tires where recommended, keep pressures correct, and rotate regularly to avoid uneven wear.

Budget expectation

For most owners, annual maintenance is lower than a comparable gas car, but not zero. The biggest swing factors are tire choice, driving style, warranty coverage, and whether your model has expensive specialty parts.

Compare EV insurance rates

EV owners often overpay on insurance. Switching carriers saves an average of $800/year — on top of the fuel savings.
