Electric trucks in 2026: the state of play
Two years ago, the F-150 Lightning was the only mass-market electric truck. In 2026, there are five serious options from five different manufacturers. The core tension in the segment: buyers who use trucks for work need real payload and towing numbers (not just EPA-estimate range at highway speed), while buyers who want a truck-shaped daily driver care more about charging infrastructure and software. These are different products despite sharing a body style.
Ford F-150 Lightning: the safe choice
The F-150 Lightning Extended Range ($70,000–$97,000) delivers 320 miles range, 2,000 lb payload, and 10,000 lb towing. It's the most familiar truck platform — same bed, same cab, same basic layout as the gas F-150 — which matters for buyers transitioning from a fleet or long-time F-150 household. Ford's BlueOval Charge Network and access to third-party CCS chargers is functional. The Pro Power Onboard system (7.2 kW export) is the most useful job site power feature in any electric truck.
- ·Range: 240 miles (standard) / 320 miles (extended range)
- ·Payload: 2,000 lbs | Towing: up to 10,000 lbs
- ·Pro Power Onboard: 7.2 kW — powers job site tools or home during outages
- ·Starting price: ~$57,000 (Pro) to $97,000 (Platinum ER)
Rivian R1T: best-built, most capable off-road
The Rivian R1T Dual Motor Large (~$69,000) offers 410 miles range — more than any other electric truck — and exceptional off-road capability with air suspension, four independent motors in some configurations, and a thoughtful storage system (gear tunnel, front trunk, bed). Rivian operates its own Adventure Network of DC fast chargers, accessible only to Rivian owners, with reliability that rivals Tesla's Supercharger network. Build quality is the best in the electric truck segment. Downside: towing range drops dramatically — expect 150–180 miles towing at highway speed.
- ·Range: 410 miles (Dual Motor Large) — best in class
- ·Towing: 11,000 lbs | but range drops to ~150 miles towing at 65 mph
- ·Adventure Network: proprietary DC fast chargers, high reliability
- ·Starting price: ~$69,000
Chevy Silverado EV and Ram 1500 REV
The Silverado EV Work Truck starts at $40,000 (fleet-focused) with a consumer WT at ~$52,000 and RST at ~$72,000. The RST delivers 450 miles EPA range — the longest of any electric truck — and 10,500 lb towing. It charges on Ultium platform at up to 350kW. The Ram 1500 REV (available in 2025–2026) offers 350 miles range and 14,000 lb towing capacity — the highest towing spec of any electric truck. Both are newer to market than the Lightning and R1T so real-world reliability data is still accumulating.
- ·Silverado EV RST: 450 miles range, 10,500 lb tow, up to 350kW charging
- ·Ram REV: 350 miles, 14,000 lb towing (highest in segment)
- ·Both newer to market — check owner community forums for reliability data
Tesla Cybertruck: for specific buyers only
The Cybertruck Foundation Series (~$80,000) delivers 340 miles range and 11,000 lb towing. Its polarizing exterior aside, the real differentiator is Supercharger network access and Tesla's software maturity. Air suspension, steer-by-wire, and 48V electrical architecture are genuinely innovative. The truck bed is short and the frunk is large — opposite of most pickup buyers' priorities. Buy a Cybertruck if you want Supercharger access in an electric truck and the look doesn't bother you. Skip it if you need a conventional bed layout or blend into a job site.
